First Months of Graphic Design

2 minute read

My first month in the world of graphic design

Just over a month ago, I started my graphic design apprenticeship with Inventive, not really knowing what to expect, I felt like I was starting school again. It helped that I was lucky enough to have a weeks work experience with Inventive a few weeks before I started properly, so coming in on my first day wasn’t too daunting.

Leaving college half way through a BTEC course in Art & Design was a tough decision for me, however I knew I was ready to get stuck into a full time job – I fell upon the apprenticeship for a position as a graphic designer by accident. It was part of a research project through college to expand my knowledge of what to do after my course had finished. But, something was telling me to apply for it, I wouldn’t be losing anything, in fact I gained an interview through it and a weeks worth of work experience, I saw it as an opportunity. AND I GOT IT. I was ultimately shocked, and couldn’t wait to start.

I was first exposed to graphic design through college, so I’m thankful for that, knowing that something I may design for a client would be put out there in the real world seemed pretty cool. Instantly I knew that’s what I wanted to do, that’s where I wanted to go in life – Inventive was the perfect match, I knew they would teach me the do's and don'ts of all things design. Being surrounded by experienced and knowledgeable designers each day is the key to learning on the job, alongside going to college one day a week, I knew I’d be in the best hands to benefit me.

I have already been able to experience a wide range of design in the first month I have been here working on everything from posters to brochures, logos to banner stands and business cards to calendars. I've been learning to use Adobe InDesign, a programme I wasn’t too familiar with, and expanding my knowledge of typography.

Even though I’ve only been here for just over a month, I can honestly and truly say I love it! Combining my passion for design and gaining experience is everything I’d hoped for, it has truly been the best decision I have made for myself. If I were to have been asked a year ago, not even that, just four months ago, I would have not seen myself in a full-time job as a Junior Graphic Designer and working towards a qualification in Creative & Digital Media through Petroc College.

So yes, there it is, my first month at Inventive, I’m excited to be on this 2 year journey and excited to see what the future holds for me within the world of graphic design.
